Another fab female has joined the United Nations leadership team. Meet Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka.

A native of South Africa, Mlambo-Ngcuka became Executive Director of UN Women this week, with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon presiding. While she is now the second person to hold this position, Mlambo-Ngcuka also holds claim to a first: From 2005 to 2008, she served as the first female Deputy President of South Africa. We at Girl Up are a big fan of firsts! Mlambo-Ngcuka has shown girls and women in South Africa and beyond that they can be leaders, too.

Mlambo-Ngcuka new position is a fitting next step. She told the Global Fund for Women, for which she is a member of the board: “I took some time off after serving as Deputy President of South Africa to reflect on what to do next. I really want to continue my human rights journey by focusing much needed attention on women. So this is the right job at the right time.”

We look forward to following Mlambo-Ngcuka on her human rights journey!
